Step‑by‑Step Instructions for Vietnamese Donuts
  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon instant yeast, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and a pinch of salt until well combined.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine 3/4 cup of warm plant-based milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients while stirring.
  3. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the kneaded dough into a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm environment for about 1 hour and 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch the dough down gently, divide it into 6 equal portions, roll each into a ball, coat in white sesame seeds, and flatten to about 1/2 inch thick.
  6. Heat about 2 inches of oil over medium heat. Test temperature with a wooden chopstick; ideal is 350°F (175°C).
  7. Place each shaped disc into the hot oil, frying in batches and flipping every 5-7 seconds until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per batch.
  8. Using a slotted spoon, remove fried donuts from the oil to drain on paper towels and allow cooling.
