Step-by-Step Instructions
- Begin by tossing the chopped chicken breasts in a bowl with cornstarch, salt, and pepper to coat thoroughly. Let it rest for a few minutes.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken pieces in a single layer and brown for about 3 minutes on each side.
- Remove the chicken and in the same skillet, sauté minced garlic for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add chicken broth, soy sauce, apple juice, ketchup, bourbon, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, ground ginger, onion powder, and crushed red pepper flakes. Combine and bring to a gentle boil.
- Return the burnt chicken to the skillet and let it simmer for about 10 minutes to finish cooking and thicken the sauce.
- Optional: Combine 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with cold water and add to the sauce during the final simmer for extra thickness.
- Serve hot over steamed rice or fresh vegetables.

Notes
For kid-friendly options, substitute bourbon with more apple juice and consider Worcestershire sauce.
