Preparation
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix thoroughly.
- In a saucepan, warm milk and butter until the butter melts, then cool slightly. Whisk in eggs and vanilla.
- Pour wet mixture into dry ingredients, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
- Prepare the custard filling while the dough rises.
- After rising, roll out the dough into a rectangle, spoon custard filling on top, and roll tightly.
- Place in a greased loaf pan, cover, and let rise for about 30 minutes until puffy.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
- Cool for 15 minutes on a wire rack and dust with powdered sugar if desired.
